Overview:
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed trying to create physiotherapy programs for people living with dementia.
Memory problems, mobility challenges, and low motivation can make it challenging to create effective and sustainable exercise programs.
This live webinar will review:
- The myths about the effectiveness of rehabilitation in dementia populations
- The current exercise recommendations for older adults with dementia
- Simple programing changes to make programs dementia-friendly.
Come and learn from 10 years of mistakes I’ve made working in home care, orthopedic surgery and long-term care.
Relevance to Physiotherapy Practice:
Identification of effective therapeutic strategies for people living with dementia, and increasing capacity to deliver them, is an important priority of research and care. Exercise has consistently been shown as an effective way to improve the physical, mental and social well-being of older adults living with dementia. however, physiotherapy programing has not evolved to meet these recommendations. Despite the benefits, a small minority of persons with dementia are sufficiently active to meet therapeutic guidelines for exercise. Increasing the number of clinicians who understand how to support the needs of people living with dementia could increase the quantity and quality of exercise opportunities available to people living with dementia.
Upon Completing This Webinar Participants Will Be Able To:
- Understand how dementia signs and symptoms impact participation in programs
- Adapt exercise delivery and environment to the individual living with dementia.
- Reframe how to think about program design and goal setting
